How I Got a Web Dev Job in Japan as a Foreigner (My Real Story)

Moving to Japan changed my life in ways I never imagined. It wasn’t easy, it wasn’t fast, and it definitely wasn’t perfect—but it was worth it. This is my real journey of becoming a web developer in Japan, starting from zero.

Coming to Japan with Nothing but Hope

I came to Japan as a student with zero Japanese language skills. It was my first time leaving my country, and everything felt unfamiliar—new culture, new system, and no friends or support network.

At the beginning, even simple things like buying food or asking for directions were challenging. I realized quickly that if I wanted to survive here, I had to adapt fast.

Starting from Language School

My journey began in a Japanese language school. Those early days were tough. Learning a new language from scratch while adjusting to a completely new life wasn’t easy.

But I kept going.

I studied daily, made mistakes, and slowly improved. That phase built my foundation—not just in language, but in discipline and patience.

Transition to Programming College

After finishing language school, I decided to pursue something practical and future-focused: programming and design.

I joined a programming college in Japan where I studied:

Web design Frontend and backend basics Real-world development skills

This was the turning point. I found something I truly enjoyed.

Job Hunting Struggles

After graduation, reality hit again.

Finding a job as a foreigner in Japan is not easy—especially in tech when you’re still learning and competing with experienced candidates.

I applied to many companies.

Rejected No response Failed interviews

It took me 6 to 7 attempts before I finally got my first offer.

Each failure taught me something:

How to improve my portfolio How to communicate better What companies expect

Self-Study Changed Everything

College alone wasn’t enough.

I started focusing heavily on self-study. Platforms like Udemy helped me a lot. I kept learning:

New frameworks Better coding practices Real-world project building

Even after getting a job, learning didn’t stop.

Learning While Working

Getting the job was not the end—it was just the beginning.

At work:

I faced new challenges every day I had to learn quickly Sometimes I struggled to keep up

But I didn’t give up.

I continued studying after work, improving little by little. Over time, things started to make sense.

Where I Am Now

Looking back, the journey feels unreal.

From:

A student with no Japanese No connections No clear path

To now:

A web developer working in Japan 🧑‍💻

I’m still learning, still growing—but now I can confidently say:

I made it.

Final Thoughts

If you are a foreigner dreaming of working in Japan, especially in tech:

Start even if you feel unprepared Accept failure as part of the process Keep learning every single day Build your skills consistently

Your journey might be slow, but progress is progress.
